Weighing-up the pros and cons of Academy Status

The opportunities for schools to convert to Academy status is clearly appealing as it provides the school management team with greater control over their finances, enabling them to spend money where it will bring the best value to pupils.  It also gives them control over their own assets including the land and buildings, and with it the potential to raise funds.  And because they are no longer under Local Government control, they can keep whatever they raise through fundraising and reinvest it in their own Academy.

However, with these new freedoms come new responsibilities, so it’s important that all involved are fully aware of the implications, responsibilities and opportunities they will face during and after the process of conversion.  For instance, independence from your Local Authority will require improved internal controls of your school’s finances.
